A Remarkable Doctor: Chapter 1

[Location: Library]

Akira: I came here to read the Sage’s Guide… but it’s a bit hard to stay focused right now. I should take a quick break.

Riquet and Mitile: Ah, hello, Master Sage!

Akira: Hello. Ah, you're here too, Rutile... Will you be studying in the library today?

Rutile: Yes! I thought it’d be a good idea to study in a different place for a change.

Mitile: This is the library, so we need to keep our voices low… I feel like I should be more serious about this than usual!

Riquet: Yes, I’m liking the quiet atmosphere here. I’ll do my best today!

Rutile: Then, how about we head over to that desk over there? We’ll have to leave you for now, Master Sage!

Akira: (So they also came here to study. I’ll try putting in a little more work, too.)

Figaro: Now now, hold your horses.

Akira: Huh?

Figaro: Sorry, but you still need to lie down. Your fever’s only down for the moment because of the medicine. It’ll come back if you move around too much.

Akira: (Figaro has large hands. And they’re gentle, and cool to the touch.)

Figaro: ...Seems like your fever’s gone up again. It really was just the medicine that took care of it earlier.

Akira: Sorry for all this trouble I’m causing you, Figaro.

Figaro: Don’t worry about it. I’m a great doctor, remember?

Figaro: So even in the rare event that my treatment fails and kills you, I can just bring you back to life by turning you into a zombie.

Akira: A zombie?!

Figaro: Yep. You can stay with us forever that way. Wouldn’t you want that, Master Sage?

Akira: I don’t think so… Turning into a zombie isn’t really something I’d want...

Figaro: Aw, that’s a shame. But I was just joking, so don't worry. 

Akira: (So it’s just a joke… It’s hard to tell with him.)

Figaro: Anyway, Master Sage. I’m happy that you’re eager to learn, but did you pull an all-nighter?

Akira: Sort of… There are days when I find it hard to sleep.

Figaro: I knew it. And because you're being a bad child, I’ll make you drink this.

Figaro: Yay, you did it. But I didn’t tell you the effects of this medicine, did I?

Akira: Huh? Isn’t it medicine for my fever?

Figaro: It’s not. It's… a potion that turns you into a zombie.

Akira: What?!

Figaro: Ahaha! That was a lie. Your reactions are always so fun to watch, Master Sage.

Akira: (He’s having way too much fun with me…)

Figaro: Now lie down again and get some shut-eye.

Figaro: I’ll sit over here and read a book, so call me if you need anything, ‘kay?

Akira: ...Thank you so much, Figaro. I’ll get some rest, then.

Figaro: ...Can’t sleep?

Figaro: It can be anything. Embarrassing stories from when Oz was young, or one of the secrets Faust can’t tell anyone.

Figaro: Which will it be? They’re all interesting, no?

Akira: Hmm, they are, but… I think I’d like to hear those stories from them one day.

Figaro: I knew you’d say that. What a righteous person you are, Master Sage.

Figaro: Then, how about I ask you a question? Since you’re a very righteous person, I’m sure you’ll know what to say.

Akira: A question for me? Of course. I’ll give an answer if I have one.

Figaro: Thanks. Then, Master Sage...... What are your thoughts on love?

Akira: L-Love? That’s an unexpectedly philosophical question...

Akira: Magic? Ah, could it be that time...

Figaro: Ahaha. Exactly. You fell asleep so fast it made me feel a bit lonely.

Rutile: Master Sage still needs to rest to completely recover, so we should leave them for now.

Figaro: Yeah. Master Sage, prioritize your health today.

Akira: Rutile and Mitile told me about that time when the dead came back to life, and you protected everyone by telling them to evacuate first.

Figaro: Ahaha, so you heard about that. Well, it wasn’t a big deal. Fufu, it’s not really much of a story to tell other people.

Akira: (He looks happy…)

Figaro: So, what do you think?

Akira: W-What I think?

Figaro: About me. I protected everyone and let them evacuate. What are your thoughts on that? 

Akira: You’re… You’re really strong, I think...

Figaro: Ahhh, no, I’m not talking about strength... That’s not what I wanted to hear.

Akira: (Now he looks disappointed…)

Akira: Ah! I think you’re a really kind person for doing that!

Figaro: Aw, stop that~ You’re making me blush!

Akira: (I got it right!)

Akira: Rutile and Mitile were really grateful to you. What did they tell you after that?

Figaro: They came to me crying, “Doctor Figaro…”. They’re sooo cute. Ah, doing good deeds always feels good.

Figaro: They scolded me with tears in their eyes, telling me to not do something so reckless again. There’s no way I’ll ever get enough of that. I’m so glad I’m a kind wizard.

Akira: Will you really not tell them the truth? That you’re Oz’s co-apprentice and you’re really strong...

Figaro: Don’t wanna. The image I built will go to waste.

Figaro: And well, I don’t want Mitile to tell me something like, “Go kill them all. You have the power to do it in seconds.” 

Akira: I-I don’t think he’s gonna say something like that...

Figaro: I much prefer the relationship we have now, where I’m nothing but a slightly unreliable good young man to them.
