By Your Side A Little Longer: Chapter 1
[Location: Akira’s room, evening]
Akira: The moon is as big as ever….
When I was heading to sleep, I noticed the glimmering moonlight. Without really thinking about it, I opened the windows.
???: Master Sage~!
Akira: Hm? Who is that? Someone called out to me from above….
[Location: Sky, evening]
Murr: Yahoo! It’s me!
Akira: Murr!?
I looked above and there was Murr, his hands outstretched while plummeting downwards.
Akira: Murr, fly! You’ll fall! Where’s your broom!?
Murr: Ahaha, don’t need that!
He did a single spin, and made a clean landing in front of me.
[Location: Akira’s room, evening]
Akira: That… That scared me…! What were you doing?
Murr: A little fly through the sky! I wanted to see my dearest moon from up close.
Murr: You were staring at it too, weren’t you, Master Sage? Are you interested in the Great Calamity?
Akira: I do. It might be a little inappropriate to feel that way, but sometimes I find myself gazing at the moon.
Murr: Then let’s gaze at it up close together!
Akira: Closer? You mean by flying up high?
Murr: I like flying up high! But that won’t get us anywhere close.
Murr: There’s somewhere we can see it real, real close. Gimme your best guess, Master Sage.
Akira: Hmm…. Ah! Like through the telescope in the observatory?

Murr: ‘Cause we gotta see if your answer’s any good! Let’s go to the observatory right now, Master Sage!
Akira: Huh, right now!?
[Location: In front of observatory, morning]
Murr: A clean and clear sky! Tonight’s the perfect night to admire the moon, right, Master Sage?
Akira: I’m glad it’s sunny out here. We ended up having to wait another day, but thank you for taking me here on my day off, Murr.
Murr: A day off is the best! Master Sage is all mine today!
Murr: I wonder if I can also make the moon all mine if I look at it through the telescope? Let’s go in and find out!
Akira: Okay!
[Location: Inside the observatory, morning]
Murr: Huuh!? It’s not here!
Akira: Murr, what’s not here?
Murr: The telescope… It’s missing!

[Location: Inside the observatory, day]
Murr: Why is the telescope not here? Did it wanna go on a journey?
Astronomer: Oh, Sir Murr and the Master Sage…! Welcome to the observatory.
Akira: Ah, Mister Astronomer.
Astronomer: The telescope is currently out of commission. We’re having it checked by the mechanic, so it’s not here right now.
Murr: So it’s currently in pieces—just like me!
Astronomer: I apologize for your inconvenience. ...Actually, we have something to ask you about, Sir Murr. Would you take a look at this?
Akira: A paper? There’s a lot of writing on it; what does it say?
Astronomer: It appears that it’s some kind of code… We couldn’t decipher it, no matter how hard we tried.
Akira: Is this something that Murr wrote in the past?
Murr: Mooost likely!
Astronomer: Then, this could be the greatest invention of the century…! Sir Murr, I beg you, please decipher this!
Murr: Okie dokie! We’ll play with this today!
Murr: Master Sage, let’s decipher this together.
Akira: Me? I don’t think I can help much, I can’t really read anything….
Murr: That won’t be a problem, I’ll read it to ya.
Murr: Here’s a hint: “The telescope today”!
Akira: You’re already giving out a hint, so you already know the answer, huh….
Akira: Hmm, “the telescope today”….
Murr: It’s currently under maintenance, so it’s scattered in pieces.
Murr: But it’d be boring if we just put all the components back in the right places. Maybe we could build something new by shoving everything in randomly!
Akira: Randomly rearranging the scattered components to make something new…? Could the letters on this paper be mixed up?
Murr: If they’re mixed up, it’d be hard to read, right?
Akira: I see, so we have to rearrange it!
Murr: Correct! But we have to decipher every single letter first.
Murr: So Master Sage, let’s make the reference sheet, starting from this letter!
Akira: Phew, we finally finished the reference sheet. So starting from the first line…. What does it say?
Murr: Mono Adreste. This Mono is probably “moon”!
Akira: Huh, is this about the Great Calamity!?
Murr: Yep. The rest is Adre.
Akira: We rearrange that and we have… Eadrste, Eardest, Dearest.... Ah, "Dearest Moon"!
Akira: ...Murr, could this be….
Murr: Yep. It’s an enumeration of words of love for the Great Calamity. This is a love letter—from me to the moon.

[Location: In front of observatory, dusk]
Akira: We ended up taking a lot of time because I couldn’t read the words. But now I understand just how much you love the moon.
Murr: Ahaha. Thanks for deciphering it with me, Master Sage.
Murr: Wow, we got so into it that the sun is about to set any time now!
Akira: You’re right. I had fun, but it’s too bad we couldn’t view the moon with the telescope.
Murr: That’s no problem. The place where we can gaze at the moon up close is somewhere else, not here.
Akira: Huh, really?
Murr: Hop on to my broom! I’ll take you there.
[Location: Lake with full moon]
Murr took me to a serene lake, and I saw the moon shining beautifully in the sky.
Akira: Wow….You’re right, this is the perfect place to see the moon. It looks even bigger from here.
Murr: Right? But the correct answer is not what’s above your head, but under your feet!
Akira: Under? What do you….
When I realized, Murr had stepped into the water.
With light steps, he went further with a waltz upon the lake’s surface.
Murr: Look. That beautiful moon is right here.
Murr got down on his knees, and touched the reflection of the moon with his finger.
Murr: Aah, you’re as lovely as ever…. I’m so happy, I feel like I’m able to reach you like this.
Murr: Your beauty hypnotizes me even from miles away. And when we’re so close like this, you become even more enchanting….
Akira: Murr….
Murr: Master Sage, I haven’t introduced you to the moon on the water’s surface, have I?
Murr: This is the Great Calamity, whom I thoroughly adore. Doesn’t it look beautiful on the water like this?
Murr tenderly and lovingly caressed the water, then he turned to me.
There was a hint of despondence on his face, but even that seemed like a sign of the joyful love he was feeling.
Akira: Yes. The moon is beautiful when I see it in the sky, but the sight of it swaying on the water is wonderful too!
Murr: …. This person here is my Master Sage.
Murr: Today, Master Sage learned a lot about you.

Akira: Murr, you’re holding your broom. Are you going somewhere?
Murr: I’m going to the market with Shylock! You wanna come too, Master Sage?
Akira: Thank you for inviting me, but I have to go out on a mission after this….
Akira: Oh right, we can go out somewhere again when we have a day off together.
Murr: Yay, a day out with Master Sage!
Akira: Where should we go…. Do you have somewhere you want to visit with me?
Murr: A lot!
Murr: Like the wizard-only midnight masquerade, or to the night broom race!
Akira: Those sound fun! But is it really okay for me to go into a wizard-only event?
Murr: Of course it’s not okay! You’ll be beaten up by wizards if they find out!
Akira: I’d like to go somewhere safer for humans please….
Murr: Then what about the casino? A lot of humans go there!
Akira: A casino sounds good! You’re good at gambling, so I can still relax and have my fun.
Murr: Huh, do you prefer a casino where you can bet safely, Master Sage?
Murr: Even when you can feel the thrill of losing something, and the elation of earning something? And when all those jitters and thrills are what make it so much fun?
